Why Is My Furnace Blowing Cold Air?

Quick answer

A furnace that runs but blows cold air is most often caused by a thermostat set to “fan on” instead of “auto,” a clogged air filter, a pilot light or igniter failure, or an overheating furnace that has tripped its high-limit switch. Check the thermostat and filter first — those two account for a large share of no-heat calls and cost nothing to rule out.

Few things are more frustrating than a furnace that sounds like it’s working while the air coming from your vents is cold. The good news: several of the most common causes are things you can check in a few minutes without tools.

Work through them in this order.

Is your thermostat set correctly?

Start here, because it costs nothing and it’s a genuinely common culprit.

Check three things:

  • Mode. The system should be set to HEAT, not COOL or OFF.
  • Fan setting. This is the one that catches people. If the fan is set to ON instead of AUTO, the blower runs continuously — including between heating cycles, when the burners are off. You get a steady stream of room-temperature air that feels cold. Switch it to AUTO.
  • Temperature. The setpoint needs to be meaningfully above the current room temperature for the furnace to fire.

If your thermostat is battery-powered, weak batteries can also cause erratic behavior. Fresh batteries are a cheap thing to rule out.

When did you last change the air filter?

A clogged filter is probably the single most common cause of a furnace that heats intermittently or blows cold.

Here’s the mechanism: the filter restricts airflow across the heat exchanger. With less air carrying heat away, the furnace overheats. A safety device called the high-limit switch senses that and shuts off the burners — but leaves the blower running to cool things down. The result is a furnace that’s clearly on, pushing cold air.

Pull the filter out and hold it up to a light. If you can’t see light through it, replace it. In most homes filters need changing every one to three months, sooner with pets or during wildfire smoke season.

If a new filter fixes the problem, don’t just move on — note how quickly it clogged. A filter that loads up in a few weeks suggests a duct or airflow issue worth looking at.

Is the pilot light out, or the igniter failing?

Older furnaces use a standing pilot light. If it’s out, the burners can’t light. Many have instructions printed on the access panel for safely relighting it. If it goes out repeatedly, the thermocouple is likely failing and needs replacing.

Newer furnaces use an electronic igniter instead — usually a hot surface igniter, which is a small ceramic element that glows to light the gas. These are a wear item and they do fail, typically after several years. A failed igniter means the blower runs but no flame ever appears. That’s a straightforward repair, but it’s a job for a technician.

Has the furnace tripped a safety switch?

Beyond the high-limit switch, several safeguards can shut down heating while leaving the fan running:

  • Flame sensor. A dirty flame sensor can’t confirm the burners lit, so the furnace shuts the gas off within seconds as a precaution. Cleaning it is a common, inexpensive fix.
  • Pressure switch. If the exhaust flue is blocked — sometimes by a bird’s nest or debris — the pressure switch prevents the furnace from firing at all.
  • Condensate blockage. High-efficiency furnaces produce condensate. If the drain clogs and the overflow switch trips, the furnace locks out.

These all point in the same direction: something upstream needs fixing, and the safety device is the symptom rather than the problem.

Could it be the ductwork?

If some rooms get warm air and others get cold, the furnace itself may be fine. Look at:

  • Disconnected or leaking ducts, especially in a crawlspace or attic. Heated air escaping before it reaches the room is a common problem in older homes.
  • Closed or blocked registers. Closing too many vents raises system pressure and can cause the same overheating-and-shutdown cycle as a dirty filter.
  • Uninsulated ducts running through unconditioned space, which bleed heat before it arrives.

This is a frequent finding in older Tacoma homes where ductwork was retrofitted into a house that was never designed for it.

What you can check yourself, and what needs a technician

Safe to do yourself:

  • Thermostat mode, fan setting, setpoint, and batteries
  • Replacing the air filter
  • Confirming registers and return vents aren’t blocked
  • Checking that the furnace’s power switch and breaker are on
  • Relighting a standing pilot, if your furnace has one and printed instructions

Call a licensed technician for:

  • A failed igniter, flame sensor, or thermocouple
  • Anything involving the gas valve or burner assembly
  • A furnace that repeatedly trips its limit or pressure switch
  • Any suspicion of a cracked heat exchanger
  • Any gas smell — leave first, then call your utility

One thing worth taking seriously

If your carbon monoxide alarm sounds, or you notice soot around the furnace, a persistent burning odor, or unexplained headaches when the heat runs, stop using the furnace and get it inspected. A cracked heat exchanger can let combustion gases into your air. It’s uncommon, but it’s the one failure mode where waiting isn’t an option.
